Amazing Ideas for a Military Welcome Home Party!

Thank you to our guest blogger, Bobbi Pack, from!

As much as my husband hates to be in the spotlight I always throw him a welcome home party.  I plan it for months and make sure I have everything ready to go.  I want him to know how proud I am of him and all he does for our family, he is the strongest person I know and I think he deserves a HUGE Thank You! And, to be in the spotlight a little.

So, what do I have at his welcome home parties? Well here is a list of my top favorite things to have at this well-deserved party.
How to throw a welcome home party after a deployment.

You have to come up with your theme as everything will be centered on that.  I always do red, white, blue and the every so great ACU print.  This makes it so much easier when I hit the party store, I know what I am looking for and these colors are easy to find.  A way I save money on the decorations is hit the stores right after the 4th of July….everything is on sale!

I always go over the top on cakes for every event, birthdays, anniversaries and you guessed it welcome home parties.  To me the cake is the center piece of the food table and I always remember the cake after I leave a party. It needs to be themed to match the party.   I find a military spouse that specializes in cake decorating and give her an example of what I want and then I always am so happy with the results.

The food is vital and I always make it as simple as possible.  I go by the rule sometimes less is more… do not need to spend a ton on food and you do not need to give everyone Lobster Tails.  I love to do “make your own sandwich bar” and trust me this is a huge hit with the kiddos.  Then all you need is a few bowls of potato chips, a fruit and veggie tray and you are set.

Woot-Woot!

I like to have some music playing as well, I think it takes away any silence and the kiddos love it.  If you think you will want to dance the night away…how about a DJ? You never know it could be super fun to have a little dance floor and let the service members, their spouses and kiddos get down!

welcome home signI also have to make the outside of the house just as decorated as the inside.  I love to have several welcome home signs in the front yard with streamers of red, white and blue all over the front porch.  Nothing says welcome home like a sign from the kiddos and me.

This is one of the kiddos favorite things to do when we get ready to welcome daddy home….decorate the car! The kiddos want everyone to know we are on the way to pick up daddy.  The last deployment our car read, “move it or lose it we are on the way to get our daddy” that was super cute.

So no matter what you want to have at your welcome home party the most important thing is that you have your family back together again.  Family and friends are something you need around yourself and the kiddos when your service member returns and showing them how proud you are of them can be shown in many ways.  I just love to show my husband how much I appreciate what he does for our family with an over the top welcome home party.  We are going to be welcoming our soldier home soon and I can’t wait to throw a party for him!

    1. Hey Jeana,

This will be his first time coing home i a year and hhalf and I want hi to kno how proud I am of him and his challenging endevor. Will you pleasee give me some ieas oon what to do and how to make this get together super. Thank You

    1. Hey Darlena,

It is so nice of you to want to honor your son! First, give him a couple of days to just enjoy being home and let him spend some time with those who are closest to him. I am not sure where you live, but I have had homecoming parties at the beach, which is always fun. I would suggest keeping it low key and casual. I am speaking of my husband, but he doesn’t like too much attention. Our soldiers are usually quite humble. You could give a nice speech to share how proud you are of his accomplishments, have some yummy food and a welcome home cake. I love a good surprise, so you could surprise him. However, sometimes it is better to ask them what they want. My husband just returned home from his sixth deployment. He wanted nothing more than to come home and be with us. No fanfare this time around. I am glad I asked. How does all of this sound? I am kind of all over the place with it. Sorry.
      Have a great weekend,
