Happy Birthday to the National Guard

Today, on their birthday, why not take the time to honor the members of this service that has been a vital part of our country for centuries?

The National Guard was established in 1636 as militias to guard British colonies. This makes the National Guard the oldest military organization in America, as the Army was not established until the Revolutionary War. During the revolutionary war, the members of the National Guard were given the nickname, The Minutemen due to their quick response times.

The National Guard is America’s second-largest militia force, topped only by the Army. They have fought in every war since 1936, and its members serve our country both during times of war and times of emergency. Control of the National Guard has been given to both federal government and state government. During times of emergency, the state government can call on the National Guard to respond.
