Helping Your Kids With Their Homework

Helping Kids With Homework

Do you cringe when your kids ask you for homework help?

During my girls’ elementary school years, it was good. Yes, I can help you. Well, up to about 5th grade. The game show, Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader is REAL! Some of the homework had me second-guessing myself, but we made it. Some of the methods were a bit different than what I remembered, and all I kept thinking was, “as long as you get the correct answer in the end.”

Well, our girls are now in middle school and high school. And hey, I will avoid homework at all costs. It’s rare that they ask me for help. I want to believe it’s because I’ve taught them to be resourceful, but after overhearing a conversation, I’m not too sure. LOL

With having kids two grades apart, I tell them to seek help from one another before asking me.

Use your resources:

  • Refer to your notes
  • Call/text a friend
  • Google
  • Ask your sister
  • Ask your daddy
  • Make me your last resort

So, the other day, I heard the girls talking about homework, and I heard, “Go ask mommy.” “No, the last time mommy helped she had to go study herself. I could’ve finished forever ago waiting on her to figure it out.”

Well, ok, child.

Do you find yourself having to research and practice solving problems to help your child(ren) with their homework?
