On today’s date in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected to be the 16th president. Three fun facts about Honest Abe: At 6’4, he was the tallest president. He was the first prez to have a full beard, and, he used to store things like his pipe and documents in his tall hat. Oh, and he ended the Civil War and declared all of the slaves free with the Emancipation Proclamation. Elections matter, people!
NEED TO KNOW
Really the ONLY thing you need to know today is that you have to vote. With all 435 House seats up for grabs, one-third of the Senate, 36 state governors, 3 U.S. territory governors, and lots o’ mayors and local elections, your vote actually does count. Here are a bunch of elections decided by one vote. And here’s an awesome article about why we need more veterans in office (and there are 172 on ballots across the country today!).
You can’t check yes or no for President Trump today, but this election is still heavily about him and the policies of his administration. From immigration to health care, the military and the economy, today’s results should be a good litmus test for what the country thinks about how things are going.
Democrats are hoping for a “blue wave” and a net gain of 23 seats to win the majority. Republicans are hoping to keep on, keeping on. Big races to watch: The Georgia governor’s race is one of the most watched in the country. If Stacey Abrams beats out Brian Kemp, she’ll become the first black female governor in U.S. history. And all eyes are on Texas, where republican Ted Cruz and democrat Beto O’Rourke are battling for the Senate seat. If O’Rourke were to win, it would be one of the biggest political upsets in the history of the Senate – Texas is known as a deep red state.
WANT TO KNOW
Big plans for your 106th birthday? Arizona resident Myrtis Jewel Painter rang in her new year at her favorite restaurant – Taco Bell. Employees decorated her table and treated her to a burrito AND an enchilada. And they say fast food is bad for you…
Oh boy. Scrapping my dreams of an overwater bungalow and replacing them with an underwater villa. For only $50,000 a night, you, too, could stay at the two story Maldives resort that includes “a private gym, a stocked bar, an infinity pool, butler’s quarters, an ocean-facing bathtub and an underwater bedroom with a panoramic view of the world 16 feet under the surface of the Indian Ocean.” But before you spend that bonus – you have to buy the four night package. Sooooo, 200k BUT it comes with a private chef and automatic Hilton elite status. How’s that for an anniversary gift?
Don’t have the money saved up yet? Here’s the best way ever to make $100/hour: petting puppies!
