Staying Healthy in the Summer: 7 tips for you

Summer fun is here! Time to get out and enjoy the warm weather. But don’t forget to stay healthy too. Listen to your body and know when to take a break or go inside to cool down.

Hydrate

Drink plenty of water. The National Academy of Sciences recommends drinking about 11 cups of water per day for women and 16 cups per day for men. If you’re active, you will need to increase your water intake. Keep a bottle of water with you when you leave the house. Remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Exercise

Begin or keep up with your regular exercise routine. If you’re beginning a new exercise routine, start slow. A morning walk before it gets too hot is a great start. Swimming is also a great form of exercise. The important thing is to get moving.

Protect your skin

Apply sunscreen anytime you’re heading outdoors. Use a screen with SPF 30, SPF 40, or SPF 50 depending on your skin type. Grab a hat and sunglasses too. The sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging rays.

Rest

Summer is the time to have fun. You may be vacationing more, staying up later because the kids are out of school, etc. But don’t forget about your sleep. The summer sun can drain you. Take a nap during the day if needed. Take a full day of doing nothing if needed.

Eat healthy. Include hydrating foods to your snack list. Strawberries, watermelon, cucumber are great options. It’s easy to indulge in more junk during the summer months, but try to have a healthy balance. Add some seasonal fruits and veggies to the grocery list.

Limit alcohol consumption

There’s nothing wrong with a little spirits on a nice summer day. Along with caffeine, alcohol can leave your body feeling dehydrated. So be careful when drinking, and make sure you keep drinking your water.

Practice good hygiene

Wash your hands frequently. Take daily showers. Wash your face. You may need to wash your bed linen more during the summer months due to sweating at night.

Have fun

Get out with your family and enjoy the sights right in your town. Take a ride, enjoy a hike. Sit outside on the front porch or backyard of your own home and enjoy nature. Laughter is great medicine for the soul.
