It's June! And summer is here. And while this June looks a little different than you might have planned, there is still much to love about this season. Let's start off with a brand new Sip!

OUR EVENTS

We have some exciting events planned for the rest of the year. We're headed to Virginia, Fort Drum, and North Carolina in the fall. Due to COVID-19 our Fort Drum event originally scheduled for June has been moved to October.

THROW BACK

On June 2nd, 1953, 27-year old Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom. She was the daughter of King George VI, who had passed away in February of 1952. She is now the longest-reigning queen in history.

In the US, it was on June 6th, 1944, when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. The Battle of Normandy resulted in the allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany. We call this day, D-Day.

FUN FACTS

Summer!!! Here are some fun facts about this next season. You can share them at your next party, even if that party is over Zoom!

1) The actual first day of summer in 2020 is Saturday, June 20th in the Northern Hemisphere. The last day of summer is Tuesday, September 22nd.

2) What are the "dog days of summer?" They are the days from July 3rd-August 11th, which goes back to the ancient Romans. These are the hottest most humid days and coincide with the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star.

3) The Eiffel Tower grows in the summer by more than 6 inches. Why? The tower is made of iron, which expands in the heat and then shrinks about 6 inches in the winter.

4) 1816 is known as the "year without a summer." Because of severe climate abnormalities, the average global temperatures were decreased by .72-1.26 degrees Fahrenheit.

NEED TO KNOW

Coast Guard spouse, Paulette Suzanne Fryar has been named the 2020 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year. She has been married to her husband for 13 years, and together they have four boys. She has been supporting military spouses through mentoring and plans to continue to do so in her new role. Congratulations Paulette!

There is good news for those on stop-movement orders. Originally set to run until June 30th, the order will now be lifted in stages. This also means that some installations can start accepting transfers immediately. Which installations will be open will depend on what is happening with COVID-19 in the local area of the base or post. This will bring some relief to some military families and offer hope to others.
