It’s wild times we’re living in. And if you weren’t a germaphobe before COVID-19 took the world by storm, you likely are now. Germs are spreading quickly among us, and remaining diligent is one of the best ways to keep from spreading it even further, including into your own home.
All across the country, folks are using interesting tactics to help eliminate germs. That includes singing songs to determine how long they should wash their hands, piling on the sanitizer, and avoiding as much human contact as possible — all while buying stores completely out of hand sanitizer. But those aren’t the only go-tos when it comes to keeping your house clean. And no, we don’t mean “clean” in the traditional sense of remaining tidy and with items put away. We mean clean as in less germy, healthier, and fewer contagions running amuck.
Help keep your home less germy with these helpful tips!
Shoes at the Door
If you don’t already practice leaving shoes at the door (or even outside), it’s a great time to start! So much yuck can come in on the bottom of your shoes. (I mean, they live on the floor so this shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone.) Start asking your family members to kick off their shoes rather than tracing germs throughout the house. It’s a simple measure that can help keep your household healthier, longer.
Yes, you should wash your hands at all the obvious times (after blowing your nose or using the restroom, after a diaper change, etc.). But you’re still collecting germs when simply doing everyday tasks. Set a timer or remember to wash your hands every so often to help keep germs at bay. Maybe every 30 minutes or every hour — depending on your preference level — you can commit to clean hands. This regular fresh start will give you peace of mind that germs are being kept to a minimum.
Wipe Down Common Surfaces Often
Door knobs, sink knobs, remotes and cell phones, the top of the sanitizer bottle — all of these areas and more can be regularly disinfected. Even if your hands are clean, remember that these items likely aren’t. Regular disinfecting schedules can help keep the areas you touch most cleaner, longer. Dab with a wipe or spray of Lysol in order to eliminate more germs where they stand.
Cough into a Kleenex
The arm cough is no longer considered a best practice. Though it might be a hard habit to break, when you feel the need to cough, do so into a tissue. The tissue should then be tossed and hands washed. By coughing into a disposable surface you are helping to keep germs trapped, rather than allowing them to spread to others, or onto new surfaces.
Stop Touching Your Face
Without even realizing it, many folks will touch their face hundreds of times per day. Yikes! In a time where sickness is running wild, this can be the difference in staying well and falling ill. Passing germs to the face can mean they’re easier to spread, and therefore, that it’s easier for you to become sick.
Remind yourself that the face is a hands-free zone to keep germs as far away from the mouth and nasal cavities as possible.
Make it Fun!
We know that the handwashing and de-germifying seems like a constant. And even though you know the importance of staying clean, doesn’t mean in practice that it won’t get old. This is especially true for kids. Remember to try and make it fun so they can stay safe and clean, even once the excitement has worn off. Look for scented or colored soaps, sing songs, switch up sinks, and more. Whatever you can do to keep the germs down the drain, put it into full effect!
