As November begins, we look to Veterans Day, a day for honoring those who have served our country…from years past to more modern times.

Here at MilSpouseFest, we know and love so many veterans, including our own spouses, other family members, and friends.

FUN FACTS

These fun facts are all about Veterans Day!!!

1) November 11th, 1918 was considered the end of World War I and was called Armistice Day. It became an official holiday in 1938. In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor World War II and Korean War veterans as well.

2) In 1968, Veterans Day was changed to the 4th Monday of November but was changed back to November 11th in 1978 by President Gerald Ford.

3) Every year on Veterans Day, at exactly 11 am, a wreath-laying ceremony is held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

4) France, Britain, Canada, and Australia also honor WWI and WW2 veterans on or near November 11th.

In 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discovered a step that led to the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.

NEED TO KNOW

The Soldiers' Angels Holiday Adopt-A-Family program is accepting applications for military families through December 7th. This program matches businesses, organizations, and individuals with qualified military and veteran families that could use some extra help providing a holiday celebration for their families. You can read more about this program on the Soldiers' Angels website.

Weight allowances for household goods might go up next summer. The Army is working with other services to try to increase the weight limits across the board. We have to wait and see of course, but wouldn't that change take away some of the stress of a PCS?

Good news for students on US military bases overseas. They will be receiving free meals for the rest of the school year. They will be available at grab-and-go locations and schools.
