The Sip: She was born in Defiance

Thursday, July 26, 2018

April the Giraffe is pregnant again. Yesterday, the branch winners from the Military Spouse of the Year contest threw out the first pitch at the Kansas City Royals game, combining everything we love: baseball, MilSpouses, summer. As we’re rounding the week’s third base and heading for the home plate that is the weekend, sit down with The Sip, the bi-weekly newsletter brought to you by the team at MilSpouseFest. Informed looks good on you.

Throw Back

On this day in 1776, Congress established the United States Post Office, aka our favorite place to visit during a deployment.

Need to Know

Your feel good story for the day? An Army Captain is being heralded as a hero after witnessing a car accident, pulling one of the victims from their vehicle and administering CPR. Captain Christopher Anderson used the cadence from the Bee Gees’ famous tune “Staying Alive” to perform compressions, and after five minutes, rescue workers arrived on site to help resuscitate. Anderson said, “I stopped to help because it was the right thing to do — not just as a soldier, but as a good human being.” We salute you, good sir!

Also worthy of a salute, the Navy’s first female Admiral, retired Rear Adm. Alene B. Duerk, who passed away earlier in the week at the age of 98. It took 197 years for the Navy to name a female admiral, and Duerk was it. We think it’s pretty awesome she was born in Defiance, Ohio. Rest in peace, ma’am.

Other things to know today? President Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker reached an agreement, to start work on eliminating trade barriers and tariffs. More than 200 people were killed by coordinated suicide attacks in Syria this week, making it the “bloodiest death toll” in the Suweida province since the start of the war in 2011. And finally, a lake has been discovered on Mars. Sure it’s a mile below the surface, but we think it’s just a matter of time before we’re booking an AirBnB. Or with our luck, getting orders there.

Reading While We Sip

It’s shark week, and even if it wasn’t we’d love this post from Heaven Not Harvard, about how community matters when sharks are in the water.

Curious about leaving active duty and joining the Reserves? Check out this great piece from Servant Mama.

One of the perks of moving? The great declutter. Check out how moving made this woman a minimalist.

Have you heard of the #InMyFeelingsChallenge? Well a border collie just won it by riding a scooter. (You’re welcome.)
