Tuesday might just feel like Monday’s ugly sister, but we promise it will get better with The Sip, the bi-weekly newsletter brought to you by the team at MilSpouseFest. Informed looks good on you.
On today’s date in 1908, the first beauty contest was held in Folkestone, England. Throw on your heels and head to the pool. Just kidding. Wear something practical and watch these pageant bloopers instead.
Need to Know
Yesterday, President Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law at Fort Drum. “The National Defense Authorization Act is the most significant investment in our military and our war fighters in modern history,” Trump said. “We are going to strengthen our military like never ever before and that’s what we did.” The word “Spouse” appears in the 788 page bill 58 times, so there’s plenty in the NDAA that will impact military spouses, including an entire section devoted to military family readiness. One little fun nugget: Mandating reports about the effects of PCSing on employment. Spoiler alert, Congress, it has an impact. And just like that we saved taxpayers several billion dollars. You’re welcome.
Also studying the impacts of PCSing? The Military Family Advisory Network held a Solutions Summit in Washington, DC over the weekend, bringing together milspouses from around the world to brainstorm how to solve the impacts of frequent moves on military families, how to engage and support more military spouses in entrepreneurship, and how to stem food insecurity for military families. Beyond ideas, they’re going to implement solutions (Congress, hold my beer). Learn more about what they’re doing and how to get involved, here.
Finally, the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin, has been admitted to hospice. Sending her mad love and all our R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Dust off your resume: You can get paid to live on a beautiful Greek island with 55 cats. The job at God’s Little People Cat Rescue begins November 1, 2018, with a minimum requirement of six months of work plus a one-month volunteering intro, and you only have to work 4 hours a day. And we thought training for a marathon was a good deployment project. Please someone do this. It sounds purrrrrfect.
Cats not your thing? Apparently for the majority of the world, goats are. Named this years’ hottest cultural trend, goats are taking the United States by storm, including goat yoga. According to The Outline, although more than 10 states offer the classes, the original goat yoga business owner is expected to surpass $300,000 in revenue this year. “The trend is so saturated that goat yoga made it into a rum ad this summer featuring DJ Khaled,” the author of this must-read piece shared. There’s also goat golfing, vacation retreats and possibly our fave, community engagement with goats. We’re not kid-ding (see what we did there?).
And last but not least, you have to read about what this hilarious mom did when asked to cover up while breastfeeding. Touche’, ma’am. Touche’.
Reading While We Sip
In this fascinating article on Inc. about working from home as the world’s smartest management strategy, research from Stanford and other sources cite that working in yoga pants (sorry, actually it doesn’t talk about pants, but it’s probably implied) vastly raises productivity. And the milspouses say, “Amen.”
Here’s something we all need: Permission to disconnect. Read this great piece over on Uplifting Anchor.
